Bitbucket gets acquired: what next for git ?

Do note that I have not said github , but git. Because Github is the killer app for git – and now that bitbucket has unlimited public AND private repositories, that lead is soon melting away. What I dont understand is that, why has’nt Github sponsored any development towards making git as a platform-neutral tool. [...]

Ubuntu is sucking more and more (will pay for fixes..) : suspend/resume and dual monitor issues

I just dont know – Ubuntu is sucking so much more that it is affecting my work severely. I have infact made an offer to buy Amazon gift coupons for fixes. Bug 568711 is particularly nasty : it targets suspend and resume behavior. The worst part is that it is confirmed with a severity of [...]

Finally…. OpenOffice forks off from Oracle. Create Libreoffice

There’s a lot of things that are wrong with OpenOffice (slow, clunky interface, Java…) but there are more than enough things that are right. Finally Libreoffice has been forked off to take the ODF based software suite in the direction it was intended. I’m planning on supporting it by donating to its dev fund – [...]

Postgresql 9.0 goes gold!

Postgresql 9.0 has been released . With built in streaming replication and hot standby,  it means there is absolutely no reason to go MySQL anymore. Oh and if you want to use a PHP based CMS with Postgresql, use Drupal which has the best support.

Using Git on Windows without any of the Cygwin/msysgit nonsense

Git was made by Linus – of course there would’nt be a nice library which can be ported to other platforms. So the usual way of using Git on windows would be to use Cygwin/msysgit. Well there are people who want to use Git, but dont want to use the *nix way of doing things. [...]

Pressflow (or Drupal) on Ubuntu 10.04 and later .. with nginx, php-fpm and clean-urls

For god’s sake do not use PHP 5.3 . Custom compile your own php-fpm 5.2. Maybe setup nginx with clean URL and the configuration given . If you use PHP5.3, then any failure in any db connection/query (for me it was postgresql) will result in the php thread being killed (“child process exited with status [...]
